In this semester, we have learnt a lot about lesson plan and have been exposed of macro-teaching and micro-teaching. Therefore, in order to complete the SCE 3108 coursework, we have to do a lesson plan and present in macro-teaching. In 12/8/2010, I have done a micro teaching as the task given. I have chosen year four lesson to try out my skills. Multimedia utilization was chosen as my skill to be improvised in front of my pupil’s friend. Under the theme investigating living things, my learning objective was understanding that humans have basic needs. My learning outcomes were a) Identify the basic needs of human. b) Give reasons why humans need food, shelter, air and water and c) Act related to the learning objective. Therefore, within ten minutes, I have to finish up my lesson by using multimedia utilization skill.
In my teaching, the pupils have already known that humans need to eat. So I just have to continue their understanding deeper. The students’ cognitive level was good in learning. My multimedia presentation was power point slideshow. The facilities that I needed were a computer and a projector to present out my slide show. The slide show was made carefully to ensure the students to stay focus in learning and would not feel bored and sleepy. I have learnt a few techniques and skills to maximize my power point slide show usage so it would be more interesting and can attract all kind of student.
While the lesson in progresses, I have identified a few strength that I should apply in the next teaching training or in real of application. The strength was the slide show used. It has attracted all the ten pupils in the class. All my friends that have acted as the pupils mesmerized toward slideshow. They focused on what was I going to teach and explain about. All the teacher trainees pupils looked like curious on how was I made the slideshow. It means, it would be able to attract the student to stay focus in the lesson and pay attention toward multimedia in front. The slideshow was made interactively with full of colours and using an attractive font. A few pictures were also loaded together with the names in the slideshow so the students would not feel bored and make them easy to remember about the lesson.
Another of my strength that I can see from the video recorded is, my sense of humor. I do not know if what I have done does not count as a joke. But all the students seemed happy and chuckled. Therefore, my lesson would not be bored and the relationship between the student and the teacher would be closer. We also can get rid out the stress and tension faced by any student and teacher and can cure mind sickness as well. It is one of the elements to be a great teacher. The lesson taught would be more interesting if a few funny things included. Therefore, in my opinion, a comedian teacher is among the best.
Even though, there were still weaknesses in my teaching skill. I have identified those only after I have done my micro-teaching. After a few discussions and reflection session with my friends and lecturer Che Rahim Che Din, A lot of things that I have done must be improved. The most first thing that we have identified was the way I spoke and gave the explanation. It was too rapid and not clear. Many words could not be heard by the student. So, the lesson or messages that I have taught might be not delivered. I was more on explanation too. So the chance for the student to involve in teaching and learning was too little. It would be pathetic if the lesson could not be understood by the student and they just shut it up without telling the truth. So, the things just go on and would affect the students’ examination.
My next weakness that my friend and I have identified is the movement in the classroom. My movement and motion in the classroom was a little bit rigid. I was walking and talking just around the computer and the slide. It seemed like the relationship between the student and teacher was not too good. So, the student would feel ignored and could disturb the student focus. Feeling being observed and treat is important to the student so they may not feel alone. We as a teacher should be able to be their friend and know about their life and problems.
Therefore, to gain my power in teaching, I have to accept all the comments and opinions. Firstly, I have to be easy while in the class. So to get rid of bad emotion, I have to do a light exercise before entering any class to do a lesson. I have to take a deep breath and let it out slowly. I have to talk slower then what have I done before and keep the pronunciation clear. My voice also should be louder so that the pupils at the back would not feel sleepy. One more thing about voice is, I have to speak with an attractive intonation suitable with contain spoken. Therefore the student would always look at their teacher.
I also have to change my movement and the path I walk in teaching. As I have mentioned earlier, I should go to the student directly and join them in teaching and learning process. Sometimes, they should go in front to join me. There is no wrong as long as the learning outcomes achieved. A teacher should make good relation with their student with a little chats and jokes so that the student would feel convenient with the teacher. The teachers have to concern about all their students and ensure that all the students are in well and always ready for lesson.
I really hope this experience would help us in this coming practical and more in being a great teacher. Hoping the teaching skills to improve, we have to accept all the comments and suggestions given and still welcoming for the next experiences. All the advices would be useful and we would like to say thanks for those who have helped me finishing the task.
In order to complete SCE 3108 coursework, I have to finish a macro teaching as the task given. In 29th of august 2010, I had my forth School based experience for a week. This was my opportunity to complete my macro-teaching after I had experienced micro-teaching before. The school that I have gone to was Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Dato’ Abdul Hamid 2 in Pasir Mas, Kelantan. Because of the title chosen, I have to take year four class to be my experiment student. The class that I asked to enter was 4 Terbilang that was the first top class at the school. The total of the student was twenty four consist of ten boys and fourteen girls. The period that I got was the last period 12:15 until 1:15. So the students were waiting for the bell to ring to go home.
Under the theme investigating living things, my learning objective was understanding that humans have basic needs. My learning outcomes were a) Identify the basic needs of human. b) Give reasons why humans need food, shelter, air and water and c) Act related to the learning objective. The student had already known about human do breathe and eat. Therefore, my job was to explain more and tell them those are the basic need of human. For this session, I have prepare a few teaching aids such as a short video, a power point slide show and flash card. I had asked the teacher permission to take her class earlier.
When I walked into the classroom, the silent class became noise and they smiled at me. In my opinion they were welcoming me as their new teacher. Firstly I told them about being a replace teacher just for that period and told them that I had permission from their science teacher. I asked the monitor who was not here. There were two boys have not attended that day. Before the lesson begun, a refreshing activity was conducted by me to reduce the sleepy mood. They seemed happy and smiled at me. Firstly, I was planning to show them a video related to the lesson that I was going to teach. But, the class that I entered has no LCD. They told me that the school only have LCD projector in the laboratory. Even though, I have no choice and by using my own laptop, I ask them to gather in front to watch the video. All of them gave their attention on the screen and seemed interested. After a few questions, the got what was I going to tell and teach them. Therefore, my plan was success. I got their attention and they became curios. Therefore, one advantage identified.
I continued the lesson with the power point slide show. For me, power point slide show is more interesting and attractive stuff then using chalk and talk. The slideshow was made interactively with full of colours and using an attractive font. As the result, the students were always looking at the slideshow and it would make the student stay focused in the learning process. A few pictures were also loaded together with the names in the slideshow so the students would not feel bored and make them easy to remember about the lesson. The second advantage was found.
For the next activity, I have divided the students into a group of five. So, there were four groups built. I have given a flash card to each group. The flash cards have different type of picture. There were food, a women gasping for air, a shelter and water. They were asked to discuss and present their results in form of action. I asked them to act in front of the class. While they were presenting, they seemed happy and I heard they laugh. This activity looked suitable for their level. Besides of having fun, they could memorize the lesson that has been taught. They have applied the lesson in other form.
A work sheet was given to each of them in a form of language game. I gave them ten minutes to complete and answer the entire questions given. I allowed them to discuss each other to find the answer. I did not mind the noise made. After the time give has end, I have chosen a few student to read the question and give the answer. All of them have given correct answer. In my opinion, this is the advantage of discussion. They may refer their answers each other. Applause for them. At the end of the lesson, I asked a few student what they have leant that day. All of them seemed know about what they have learnt.
As the closure, I have asked three of the students to reflect about the topic taught that day. Two of them could answer the question correctly and one of them answered not accurately or not really exact.
Even though, there were still weaknesses in my daily lesson. My friends and I have identified the weaknesses after have done the teaching. First of all, not all the students have paid attention while the lesson in progress. There were student discussing about other things and did not concentrate in learning. A student was sleeping at the back and a few students seem did not understand about the topic taught. Therefore, we may conclude that the student felt bored and what we have taught was not delivered. Besides, a few students did not involve in exercise at the beginning. The teaching aid used was not attractive enough. The lesson also has lack of hands-on activity. Therefore, certain students have not completely involved in the learning process.
After my friends and I have discussed and analyzed the macro-teaching that I have done, a few suggestions or recommendations were made. Firstly, we have to be more assertive in teaching, so the student would obey our instructions and would fulfill the lesson requirement. Our voices also must be clear and loud to be heard. So the student may understand the massages and easier to acquire the topic taught. Next is, the teaching aid used must be suitable and have student involvement. It means, the student may use the teaching aid in learning so the student may not feel boring. Hands-on apparatus also must be included in the lesson for any activity. So, the activity would be more fun and may involve all the students. We also would like to recommend the teacher movement must be completely all over the class. The teachers have to concern about all their students and ensure that all the students are in well and always ready for lesson.
From all these experiences, I as a future teacher really hope that it can improve my teaching skill and performance with in front of my students.
